Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Naidura?
Inspired by the Maasai tradition of moving their livestock, and the threat to connectivity outlined in the Greater Maasai Mara Ecosystem Management Plan, this journey seeks to address some of the connectivity needs, in a fun and exciting way.
Similar to a traditional Naidurra each night is spent in a secure location called an ‘Olale ’ in this case a traditional Safari camp.
It is an ecosystem worth keeping connected. In Oct 2021 the world record for different mammal species recorded in 24 hours was set in a 100 mile transect that included the route covered by the Naidurra. There are also 700 species of birds recorded on the same transect.
This Naidurra to the Loita forest literally takes place in one of the most bio diverse parts of Planet Earth.
How does it work?
A booking is made on a 4 night basis by the operator, at a cost of $12,500 for a private group of up to 8 guests in 4 en-suite guest tents.
Similar to Gorilla permits, the full amount is non refundable and is due for confirmation. It is not based on the number of people. Final numbers and tent configuration can be confirmed up to 48 hours before departure.
For example the Permit for a group of two; costs $1,562 per person night. Whereas a group of 8 will cost $390 per person per night.
Is it possible to book an operator to set up the food, beverage, service, guiding and activities?
Yes.
For those who do not wish to operate a Naidura. There are several operators currently outfitting the Naidura. Please contact us directly for an introduction.
If I operate my own, can I set my retail price?
Yes.
Please do so. The idea is that running a Naidura should be a fun and profitable exercise for the Operator and an extraordinary experience for their guests.
Just as current safaris vary in cost, different operators sell the Naidura at a different price, depending on the number of guests and the services provided. The permit is a total cost, so there are savings to be made for booking a larger number of guests or building your own departure.
The local management company checks each camp before and after each group, the operator will liaise with them to confirm time of arrival and the correct tent configuration for the group. The management entity is also able to carry out any repairs and replacements. The majority of the equipment is built in the Mara
Is there a commission to the operator on the permit?
No.
The total permit is net and is paid less transactional costs, to the Landowner, the Pitch Crew, the Equipment investor, and the local Management company. These are referred to as the foundational four.
The Operator is expected and encouraged to make their margin based on the value adds they provide.
What happens if I need more than 4 guest tents and 8 beds?
Additional equipment can be provided, however it is subject to availability and on a case by case basis. We are here to help and welcome bigger groups. The equipment is limited by the on site storage which is in a single converted shipping container. There will be an additional cost to add equipment.
Who are the Pitch Crew?
These are community members who have been selected from the local football leagues and are qualified to pitch and pack up the camp for each group. When guests are in camp they are on hand to help the incoming operator with the camp functionality, water, showers, firewood and path lighting, They will also assist as requested in the kitchen, mess and rooms.
Can I use the Pitch crew to be the service crew?
Whilst we encourage the incoming operator to engage with the Pitch Crews and they are willing and able to help. It must be noted that they are not professional service personnel. Many are building skills to become chefs, drivers, guides when graduating from the Pitch Crew. It is for this reason the operator is responsible for their own service delivery.
Is there accommodation for the incoming service crew?
There is accommodation for up to a total of 8 visiting crew in double dome style tents. This includes drivers and guides. This accommodation is serviced by the Pitch Crew, It has shared outside showers and toilets. Bedding is in sleeping bags and liners on camp cots, with a mattress and pillow. There is a dining area for the visiting crew attached to the Kitchen.
The Pitch Crew have their own transport, supplies and accommodation on site.
Who ensures that the camp is ready, correctly equipped and in good working order?
The local management company checks each camp before and after each group. They will liaise with the Operator to confirm time of arrival and the correct tent configuration for the group.
What does the operator need to bring?
We recognise that each operator has their own particular way and style of interacting with their guests.. In practice the operator is responsible for the food and beverage, the hospitality service, transport, guiding and activities. These are the value adds and we encourage operators to come and familiarize themselves with the equipment, the route and the possibilities. It is also important to see how many Service Crew they wish to bring with them.
Is the incoming operator responsible for all Food, Drinks and Amenities?
Yes.
This includes toiletries, drinking water, ice, anything that is consumed by your guests and your service crew.
The Pitch Crew will have their own supplies and the incoming operators are not responsible for their food, drink and amenities.
